A local jazz fanatic, by profession a carpenter, took on a
village pub way out in the sticks and turned it into a jazz venue.
Money appeared to be no problem...I supplied the sound system
and he went for the top option gear.
He booked local bands and Big Names from London and worked
really hard at promoting the place every which way.
It didn't take off and we would turn up and play to an audience
of 6 people on average so clearly he was losing money hand over fist.
We were booked for a gig...I got a phone call from him about 6 pm.
'Sorry Clive but the gig is off'
'What's the problem?'
'Well...I'm just climbing down a ladder out of the back window
'cos the Bailiffs are breaking down the front door...I'm off.'
I managed to contact the other guys and stop them making the trip.
We never saw him again but did hear that he owed everyone from
the brewery to the tax man huge amounts.
Shame...he really tried hard...but that's jazz for ya!!

That's a nice one! I played this weird club several years ago, nobody
hung out in the bar but many people walked right past us and into a back
"storage room" and never came back. I don't think they were there to drink
or listen to blues. The club wasn't really out of town but way on the other
side, a good 45+ minute drive depending on traffic. We had a second date
there a few weeks after the first, and just as I'm getting in the car to go
meet the drummer (for a carpool) the phone rings. I almost let it go but on
the last ring before voicemail I run inside and answer it. The singer is
there, calling early from the club:
"Hey man, I'm at the club and I don't think the gig is on tonight.
There's newspaper all over the windows and nobody is here. The door is
locked but, hey, hold on a minute, the door (loud thumping) is almost (loud
crash in the background) well I'm inside and yeah, there's nothing in here,
it's empty, the bartender is gone, so don't come out tonight."
