Since I play bass but have not been playing bass for quite some time
because I am playing guitar in the band I expect a bass player to be
at least as good as I am.
I learn my parts almost exclusively from MP3's.
If I can hear it I can play in...with practice.
Contrary to some peoples belief I don't usually play bass note for
note but I do try to play the root on one where applicable.
That is really all I ask of a bass player.
Keep the groove going and play the root on one.
There is absolutely no need for tab.
I agree about not bringing any type of written music to auditions,
rehearsals and especially gigs.
So my band has this bass player who learns by bass tabs.
If he can't find the tabs he writes them out.
You would think that after writing them he would know the song.
He has had a month to learn 15 songs.
He can't get through any of them even with his tab charts.
We have a gig Saturday and he just told us that he won't be there
because he doesn't want to make a fool out of himself on stage.
Now I have to find a bass player who can learn 15 songs in 6 days.
I'll probably end up doing the gig with no bass.
Sucks big time!
Well The Doors did it.
