Next week, my band's playing a room that's an acoustical
nightmare. Tile
floors, glass all around, peaked gazebo ceiling. We'll
be in the center of
the room with no wall behind us, facing a bar area.
Other than the usual
tactic, keeping the volume down, I wondered if it might
help to put the
mains on the floor instead of up on stands. Work it like
a home stereo.
Any
thoughts on this?

it never helps acoustically to sit mains on the floor.
subs yes, tops
no.

We thought of hiring these people, but we're not sure how
much of our $600
we'd need to give them. All of it, or just $599? :-)

lol! well run it yourself and do the best you can.

I saw a friend's band at this place last night. These guys
have played the club MANY times, and the best they could do
was to keep the volume very, very low. I may have to use a
sound reinforcement tool to help our drummer watch his
volume: A baseball bat.

Light stix, heavy skins, a large fluffy pillow and copius
gaffa beats a GBH charge.
Low volume is a challenge for most bands, good luck. If
anything, placing your spkr cabs as high as they go on the
stands might help - the further away from the band the better
in those situations.
