Check out the Fulltone Bass Drive, it's my favorite distortion box and
not that expensive either. Sure, it says bass on it, but that thing sounds
just as good with a guitar as a bass. It has two channels that are very
simple to use, I like to keep one dialed in with some light distortion for a
tube overdrive tone, and the second one cranked up for serious over-the-top
Armageddon distortion. :)

+1 on FullTone. I keep one hooked up all the time
in my music room [altho not always engaged] and I
keep the newer mosfet version for gigs. There is a
definitely cooler effect with the mosfet, but it's not
so huge that you can be sure the difference will be
worth anything in a live setting. If you record tracks
you'd prolly find the difference worthwhile.
But it's a LOT more than $30. Sometimes cheap is
also just perfect, but some folks have a hard time
admitting it !
OTOH, the FullTone is more useful than a plain
distortion pedeal, since it can also enhance tone
rather than just destroying it :-)
