IIRC, not-yet-sir Paul was suddenly in need
of a bass, not in possession of much sterling,
and the German economy was not totally up
and running compared to the relatively better
off English economy .... so German imports
were pretty cheap in England. Being in sort
of a hurry, getting an especially good price
on the Hofner not-yet-beatle bass, since no
other customers had been both foolinsh and
broke enuf to choose it ... it went home with
not-yet-sir Paul, and thus was accidentally
recued from the unmourned demise that it
so rightfully deserved. The rest is history ...
