I'm an IT director.
The pros in here seem to have a hard time remembering that the term "Bass Player" includes amateurs too. Reading music is way way down on the list of things that would make my life better.

The lesson was that 5 guys missed the chance to do exactly that because
they couldn't read.

I don't enjoy playing in the kind of situations that would require sight
reading. I'm satisfied with my playing and my ability to get enough gigs
for my liking. My livelihood doesn't depend on it, so why should I learn
it again?
