Furthermore - the melody line is as important and distinctive a part of
the tune as the line you've written out. That would not be so easy to
write out in tab.
Nor would it be easy to write out in standard notation. However, if you
did so in software such as Sonar, you could export it as tab. Still,
what's your point?
My point is that, beyond the most trivial example of very simple tunes
with equal length notes TAB really doesn't work very well.
Why people feel the need to point out its flaws and the ways it is NOT
intended to be used *every* time the subject comes up is beyond me.
OK. There's an obvious flaw in your TAB of Peter Gunn, when used
exactly as it is intended.
I'm kind of surprised no one has pointed it out yet - but then like most
of these discussions I suspect everyone has been discussing this without
having a bass in their hands.
OK, so it's difficult to type with a bass in your hands - don't worry,
it is alright to put it down after doing the exercise.
So. Given that tab as it is intended to be used - ie. to supply the
fingering position to play the piece and be read along with listening to
the original recording.
OK. Let's all go out and get our basses, print out the tab, fire up
iTunes, go to the iTunes store and play the preview for Peter Gunn -
Henry Mancini Orchestra, original version - it's OK you don't have to
pay to listen to the preview. Or go here:

What flaws of TAB are revealed by this simple exercise?
I've already done this exercise and could, of course, just give the
answers - but I think it would be an interesting exercise for everyone
here to try - tabophiles and tabskeptics alike.
If you watch the clip watch carefully between 1 minute and 1 minute 30
Small prediction - js will start foaming at the mouth at around 1:19 - I
know I did...
