Did I miss the part where we established the quality level? I always
found Fenders to vary instrument to instrument.

You must have. Comments on the "road-worn" Fenders seem to be
consistently positive.

I've played Squiers
that I thought kicked ass and expensive models that felt "yucky" for
lack of a better term.

Think statistics. Low price isn't necessarily a consistent indicator of
shoddiness, nor is high price a guarantee of quality. Certainly in
terms of quality of certain components (tuners, pickups, electronics,
etc.) the lower-price instruments are generally lacking, which is why a
lot of folks replace those components in the cheapies. But aside from
those, I think you don't have to sample as many specimens to find a gem
in the higher-priced models.

I think the whole argument is getting a little out of hand. I myself
own some "real" vintage Fender basses so I look a little askance at
the "pre-worn" stuff. But in the end I have always cared much more
about sound than looks, so if a RoadWorn bass is actually a good value
considering its tone/workmanship/playability etc., then buying one
should be considered somewhat less offensive than, say, child
molestation.
