Why would you say that? The fact is that nearly everybody acknowledges that Fender quality varies not only within a rack of instruments in a given store on any given Tuesday but over the years as well.
You're making unsubstantiated assumptions. From comments that I've
seen, I've concluded that the answer to that question is *yes*. Most
players that I've seen comments from bought them because they perceived
that they *are* higher quality. I agree that it doesn't necessarily
make sense logically. But I'm talking about empirical data, not logic.
Yeh, I'm gonna have to disagree with your usage of empirical data. All we have is a bunch of anecdotes, and that applies to all instruments by all makers.
Why don't you ask Jimmy? He actually has one.
There are guys who sincerely believe their cheap Squier plays like an instrument costing 10X as much. You know what? I believe them, because I've picked up Squiers that seemed awesome. Some people, like the review you cited, say their premium instrument was junk. I believe that as well, because I've picked up ones that were sorely disappointing.
What I am questioning is the conclusion that Fender relics are consistently of a high quality. I have no reason to believe that based on what Fender has done throughout their history. I can also see reasons why people who buy relics might inflate the "quality" because they feel kinda strange buying an artificially aged instrument. I can also see how they might keep quiet about flaws.
Now, if somebody tells me about the things they know Fender is doing differently that explain a higher quality, that would be a different matter.
