I think it's likely she's preparing for the next presidential
election.

Putting Palin's politics aside, I don't think it's wise for her to have
given that explanation (whether it's true or not). The present and
previous White House occupants successfully campaigned for the
Presidency while still holding office (Senator in one case, Governor in
the other).

Palin's term would have expired in 2010, a full two years before the
next Presidential election.

I suspect that there's something else behind this; if so, we'll be
hearing about it soon enough.
