Why does this progression bother me so much?
The song is an 8 bar blues shuffle in G. Nothing strange here ...but...
The solo goes up to A major then to C, then to F then finally back to G and
repeats.

It appears that my brain is wired in such a way that I can't get over the A
being major, but as the progression goes from F to G to A it starts to sound
right....until the C comes around again and throws it all out of whack...

Has anyone run across this progression in a well known song that sounds
"correct"
I think I just need a different take on it.

Can't think of any songs ATM, but I think you and Shaugnessy should
form a "Too Smart For Our Own Good" club ;) And you can take my
band's guitarist with you...any time he gets sheet music with a slash
chord, instead of seeing it as simply a chord with a different bass
note on the bottom, he has to scratch it out and write down some
convoluted chord that is so much harder to figure out than the slash
chord. Like instead of a C/G, he has to write as something like a
Gsus4add6 or some similar weird chord.

I don't know...I've never had a problem with stuff like this because I
don't see music as static. I see it as fluid with a lot of exceptions
being possible. But in your case, what's really weird to me is the C
is what ultimately throws you, and that's totally in the key of G. If
anything, I would think you'd get more thrown by the A and F.

So my advice is to be a little more dumb like me ;)

Oh trust me...I'm pretty dumb ;)
I think this progression is attempting to be too smart for it's own good.
To me it sounds like the solo modulates up a step to A then for no good reason goes to C. When it goes to F then G you start thinking a I-IV-V in C, then it modulates up a step to A again and repeats.
It doesn't feel *comfortable*
