You might have answered your own question.
Shut the AC units off at the mains and see it that takes care of the
problem. Those things are notorious manufacturers of dirty power, even
if
they are not running. Heat blowers too.
The A/C's aren't running at the moment, not warm enough here yet, but
there are various other things, e.g., a refrigerator.
Here's a question - will rewiring the circuit my amp uses (from old to
new, 3-wire, properly grounded) help my cause _if_ there are still old,
2-wire circuits running things in the house, which is all off the same
mains? It I have to rewire everything, it's not worth it, but if
cleaning up the amp's circuit stands a reasonable chance of solving the
hum problem, then it is.

I got this, as recommended here:
I may not be remembering correctly, but as I recall, you came here
saying you wanted to try that dealio, and I know for sure I said I
thought that wouldn't do the trick for you. I, and at least one
or
two others, recommended a power conditioner. Try that now.
I saw this gizmo recommended in a thread I didn't start - just seemed
worth trying, so I did. The instrument-based hum/noise is now less,
the
60-cycle hum is more.
I'll contact AI and see what they say - it only happens in my house,
haven't noticed it at a gig, so it's likely something here but I
don't
know what.
Power conditioners at zzounds.com go from $99 to $799 - care to
recommend anything specific, anyone?
I do know that my outlet is only two-prong (not grounded) but it's on
the first floor of the house, and it's probably not that big a deal
to
get the electrician to come by and give me a grounded outlet there.
At
the time we moved into our house about 15 years ago, we had to have
the
mains redone - apparently the people that made our circuit breaker
box
had been sued out of business because people's houses were burning
down.
We got more service, and we also had several new grounded circuits
added
to handle a few room air conditioners, so I don't think adding a few
more would be a big deal, and we have an electrician we know and like
who also doubles as our handyman.
Electrician first, or buy a power conditioner?
Just to be clear, the 60-cycle hum I'm now hearing sounds like a new
noise. Without it, I get noise-free play from most instruments
including cheap ones, but the cheap ones make noise if you set the
switch to use only one pickup, e.g., if you take 5-position pickup
switch on a guitar, positions 2 and 4 make zero noise, but the others
hum.
