If by "clubs" you mean TGI McPuffenstuffs in the mall, or the trendy Yuppie
coke exchange downtown, then maybe.
If you're talking about places where regular joes/music listeners go, it
definitely NOT a good thing to have a chunk of your clientele sitting
outside the bar for much of the evening and/or not staying as long as they
normally would because they don't feel "welcome" - and yes, I have had
people tell me this.
I can't believe it, but they're actually making noise about a smoking ban in
Charlotte - right in the middle of Tobacco Country.
We have a mental affliction in this country which goes something like "I
personally don't like [X], therefore [X] should be illegal for EVERYONE."
Various religious, political, and insurance operatives have used our mental
affliction to manipulate us into doing (or not doing) all sorts of things
that look ridiculous in hindsight.
Personally, I don't smoke cigarettes, I don't like them, and I hate the way
my clothes stink when I finish a gig. But I know GOING IN that clubs are
smoky, and that I can CHOOSE not to play there. I know a musician who does
just that. He had a cancer scare awhile back, and refuses to play and bar or
smoking restaurant for any amount of money.
If we REALLY want to find the answer, perhaps we should let THE CLUBS decide
whether to allow smoking, and see who wins out.
I'll get off my soapbox now.

My point is...the bars have gone for a shit because of this. The no-
smoking bullshit didn't help.
It helped me. I go to more clubs now that I don't have to come home
smokeand red-eyed, and I enjoy the shows more.
It's a year out, here in Chicago. Anyone have any indication that the
"no-smoking bullshit" is actually hurting clubs? All of our fans who
were at the last gig.

It's a myth that it hurt club attendance. If anything, it's helped. I know
quite a few people who used to say they'd never go to clubs because of the
smoke. Now they go to clubs.
