It's the upscale version of those cheap keyboards that have built in
rhythm and accompaniment patterns.  As for your thoughts on improvising,
let me point out that to use a looper live requires a great deal of
pre-planning and very little improvising.  I've tried.

For me, the preplanning is about which part will go into which stack. As for
the parts themselves, I'm doing them spontaneously. IOW, yeah it's a 12-bar
Blues with the bass playing a certain style of line... but the line itself
is different every time I play it. Same with rhythm "guitar" parts and
solos.

Do I have as much freedom as with a band? No. But so far, I'm not locked
into "this note goes here, that note goes there..."

Ask not what bass can do for you...Ask what YOU can do for bass.www.laneonbass.com|www.myspace.com/laneonbasswww.deeperblues.com|www.myspace.com/deeperblueswww.eden-electronics.com|www.myspace.com/edenelectronicswww.danvillefoodstock.com|www.myspace.com/danvillefoodstockwww.myempirestore.com|www.myspace.com/myempirestore

I think if you write a song and can't find anyone to play it with you,
maybe because you don't want to be part of a band and can't find
people willing to be your backing band, and you play multiple
instruments, and you create a backing "band" of your own playing
(maybe carve out an exception for drums, maybe), so you can strum and
sing live, that's still on this side of "legit." Even then, it'd be
good for showcases and occasional things. I wouldn't want to try
making a career of it. Once you start using anything like bass pattern
presets, store-bought backing track CDs, or the afore-mentioned--gag
me--auto-accompaniment, you're in Cheeseland without hope of
redemption.
