I've been in a lot of arguments here over the years, but I think this
is the first time I've seen so much resistance to a FACT.
This isn't "P vs J", "pick vs fingers" or some other subjective thing
where one answer may be more right than others under certain
conditions.
Gain staging is a basic tenet of a quality audio signal. You can
"Yeah, but what about..." or "well I do it this way..." all you want,
it doesn't change the FACT that if you're not putting the strongest
possible signal IN, you're not going to get it OUT.
Except it just isn't true if you know anything about noise masking, noise
addition, is the noise coherent, where does the noise sit in the
spectrum, and noise floors (never mind the threshold of human hearing).
If I have an amp with a 60dB SN ratio - it doen't matter whether the
source feeding it has 100dB SN ratio or 1000dB SN ratio. You're going to
get the same "quality" of signal out.
If I have a circuit with a 150dB SN ratio and compare it to one with
1000dB SN ratio - you can measure the difference, but it can't be heard
by humans. How much money are you going to spend for that extra,
unhearable, SN ratio?
..
So if you don't want to listen to me, fine. I honestly could give a
shit whether your volume is on 10 or zero. But don't insult both our
intelligences by saying it's "wrong".
Don't insult both our intelligences by claiming a signal with the highest
SN ratio is "right" either.
You want to claim it's "more accurate" - sure.
Better? Eye of the beholder.
Right? Eye of the beholder.
I have nothing more to say about this topic - really, what else IS
there to say? Flame away.
Well, other than to say your understanding of noise sources, their
addition, and audibility seems rather suspect - there isn't much to say.
