I visited 3 different stores and ended up with an Epiphone Les Paul
Special for $232.
There were many models for around $165 - 200. Above that, they were in
the $330 and up (over my range). Slim pickins in the $200-300 range
I plan to visit some sites and get some books soon but I have some
questions:
When practicing scales or just stretching my fingers on those wide spaced
frets, should I be keeping my index finger on the string even if playing
a note or two up on the same string? When I do, it keeps my other fingers
close and ready or is it bad habit? Near the nut, I can't quite reach my
pinky and keep my index finger at the first fret. I seem okay at the 5th
fret.
I also have to work on quieting the unplayed strings.

Go hear some local bands and try to sit where you can watch the bassist's
hands. If the bassist lets the thumb of his fretting hand wrap around to
the fretboard, stop watching. That's bad technique. Go find another band.
But if it works...
(tell Louis Johnson about it! ;-)
