If you want an actual drum machine rather than a metronome or a
software
implementation, I'd recommend the Zoom MRT-3. I bought one of these
a while back to record drum parts; it's very realistic sounding. I
stopped using it once I started using computer-based recording, and
recently I gave it to one of my daughters.
You can get the most recent version, the MRT-3B, for under $100:

A question for you - these look like they might be useful here - my
son and I practice fake book standards, him on trumpet, me on a
piano. If you were to amplify this to use with acoustic instruments,
would you use a guitar combo amp, a bass combo amp, or is something
special required? This might be a fun gadget for us to play with.
I've got a Peavey 80 watt combo that sounds nice for guitar, a less
nice Ibanez bass amp, and a really fine AI Contra that I use for
amplifying my upright bass, my acoustic/electric guitar and whenever
I don't want any added color to the sound.
I never actually used my MRT-3 with an amp but my guess would be that
your AI Contra would be the amp of choice. You really want broad
spectral range with as little coloring as possible. A keyboard amp
should work well also. You will want to experiment with the output
volume on the MRT-3 so you won't overload the amp.
I think you'll find the MRT-3 well-suited for what you want to do. The
drum sounds are pretty realistic, there's a broad selection of kits, you
can control individual drum levels from one hit to the next, and
programming is (fairly) straightforward.
