Booze vs Reality

Friday night:
First set went nicely. Sax player had 4 empty beer bottles on the floor next
to him by the end. By the middle of the second set, there were 6 or 7
bottles, and the guy was slamming shots of something clear. His solos were
becoming aimless and monotonous. I finally noticed that he had a friend in
the audience who was delivering the drinks. He was in his own little world,
seemingly oblivious to the band. He left the band a month ago due to "my
attitude", which is "You drink too much." Agreed to play one last gig with
us because we had nobody to take his place yet.
The rest of the band did a great job, especially the guitarist, who had to
do a ton of work in the month since he joined. But today, on the phone, I'm
hearing "I really didn't notice a problem with him, and we should kiss his
ass if it gets him to stay. When he's good, he's hot."
Anyone else been in a band where only one person is able to see a mess? I'm
ready to book outta this band if these guys are serious. We began losing our
audience right around when sax boy turned into a lame imitation of Ornette
Coleman.
