Might be a problem, might not. I'm left with this: if the kid has

They will be here tomorrow night.
They are driving over 60 miles to get here.
Mom said that the kid sang with bands but was never in a band.
How come?
She was the only reply to my most recent ad and we need a singer
badly.
If the rest of the band says OK then she's in.
There is a lot to weigh here.

I have visions of American Idol rejects in my minds eye ;-)

While I was still teaching high school, I saw a number of kids turn up who were really talented singers. With modern karaoke equipment readily available, a lot of these kids had turned into pretty good singers. Now, you know and I know that karaoke isn't going to make an experience stage performer, but it can get the kid to the point where they can sing with some power, on key, and in time. What's more, some of these kids manage to develop a style of their own, rather than just aping the style of whoever made the song a hit.

I'd say this kid was worth a listen. It'll be pretty plain, right off the bat whether she's worth putting anymore time into or not. Probably, there'll be a learning curve, but if she's bright and talented, she could do it. Obviously, the mother is a factor, but I agree that in the communication pt quoted, I am seeing only what some of you have said, a supportive mother who is willing to drive her daughter to persue a chance to sing with a band.

I would guess that mom is also going to be checking out the band to make sure it's an okay situation for the kid. If I had a sixteen year old daughter (I've had three at that age at one time or another), I'd want to check out the scene and make sure all was well. I'd imagine it will be clear to mom right off the bat that pt's band is a professional effort, and not just a bunch of drunks or dopers, looking to take advantage.
