This evening a small Laney RB1 amp I bought from an online store wasCorrect. A loud hum not affected by the volume control would seem to
delivered to me: the amp powers up, but it seems only to produce a loud
hum. The volume knob seems to be ineffective, if I plug a bass I can't
hear anything, even if the built-in compressor LED lights when I play a
note. If I plug a pair of headphones the speaker of course is muted; if I
plug in a jack into the AUX socket, there is no more noise, but I still
can't play anything. I do have an old two-wire only electrical
installation at home, but I tried to ground the unit anyway with a wire
attached to a household radiator, no result.
For me, it's cleary a DOA unit.. Lack of grounding would only cause
unwanted noise, but I would stil be able to play notes, right. ?
indicate a problem in the power supply, like a shorted diode or defective
capicator, and there are probably other problems as well, since you hear
nothing but the hum when you try to play through it.. Perhaps one of the
power supply caps was knocked loose during shipment. In any event, it's DOA
and needs to be returned and replaced.
