Re: Rant: God I HATE Rehearsing!

LOL

The Quintet was recorded and mixed in ONE DAY. Half the "band" I had never
even met or played with before, and none of them had seen the charts. We
have NEVER played together before or since. That was 12 years ago.

I think I've made my point...

None of the stuff on the RH side was rehearsed at all. On one occasion, I
didn't even know half the band.

In my piccolo bass trio, I'd often finish writing a song on Thursday,
chart
it on Friday afternoon, pass out the charts at the beginning of the set,
and
play it on the gig Fri night.

1) I've led my own groups quite successfully. We NEVER rehearsed, even
original tunes. ESPECIALLY original tunes.

2) Because of that, I'm not bitching like the usual "passive-aggressive
bassist who's too afraid to do his own thing, so he'll complain until he
gets his way which never happens". I'm just stating a FACT. What shocks
me
is how many people take it as Gospel that you have to rehearse the same
tunes 1000 times before you can THINK about plying out. It's a sad
commentary on the state of musicians today

3) Wine just dulls the anger, son. That's a GOOD thing.

No, it's from a perspective of a guy who's had to deal with 20 years

Trust me, for YEARS, I thought there must be some reason to it; some
essential element of rehearsing the same song 10 times in a row that
I
was
missing.

Then I came to realize, it's all about the CONFIDENCE FACTOR of the
weakest
frontperson in the group. That's it.

I do agree that things can get stale sometimes when they are
practiced
too often. But I do think that there are some songs or parts that
can
benefit from getting together and hammering them out. The question
is
whether or not people enjoy rehearsals. I happen to, but I can
certainly see why some people don't. JS' perspective is from a
freelancer's point of view. But what about people who are just
part
of a regular band? Maybe it's a different experience for them, as
they probably have long standing relationships with the people
they
are playing with? Of course sometimes that can lead to
problems....-
