My new band's about to invest in a PA mixer, and if Murphy's Law has any
validity at all, there will be one feature we'll wish we had 3 months from
now, but didn't know about earlier. What's that one feature you couldn't
live without?
First things first : Identify your budget.
Powered mixer's great for simplicity of operation, but you have to
balance the number of included power amps with how many mixes you want
to pul off the board.
2 included power amps will mean mono mains and 1 monitor mix, or just
stereo mains. Also, how much power are the amps into the loads you'll
use? You can't have too much good power. Size, weight and budgetary
limitations of course.
If you want to remain expandable down the road, I would recommend an
unpowered mixer, you can always add power amps, and with lots of aux's
you will have flexibility to run monitor mixes, record and add
effects.
A properly cased system will not be that large, and setup quite
quickly.
Behringer and Mackie I imagine are good bang for the buck, I'm not
familiar with their current offerings. I just purchased a Allen and
Heath 16:2 mix wizard for small gigs, I suppose not much difference
these days between that and Behringer, the Allen and Heath was made in
China... We'll see how it goes.
But for straight up bar gigs, I use a powered box mixer and 2 speakers
on sticks. Train the singers to work off the mains. If those gigs
don't pay for sound, don't haul it in.
Our group sprung for a Carvin XP880, 8 channels, 4-300W internal amps
(2 main, 2 monitors), dual channel switchable DSP processors, 7 band
EQ per amp channel, lotsa other goodies. All in a nice road case,
very portable. Very reasonable price. Ever since we've been using it
our faithful followers have remarked on how much better everything
sounds. Very clean, clear sound. Can run 2-8ohm speakers off each
channel, for a possible total of 8, pushing the whole 1200W. We set
it up so each main channel feeds a JBL 15" on a pole, one monitor
channel does 2 monitors by the vocal mics, the other does a monitor
for our drummer.
