Most folks near a major metro area would get plenty of stations with an
antenna, and the HD is better than any cable can deliver.

That's true, and theoretically it's better off air than off satelite.
However, I have a 60 inch Sony and I can A/B off air and off satelite at the
touch of a button and I can't see any difference.
