I wouldn't compare working a couple of "temp" jobs to what I've done
over the past 15 years, since leaving music as my main source of
income.

I'm jumping here, but it's actually more of a broad stroke comment. My last
post to this thread offered a differing viewpoint on potential success for
older musicians. But I don't want anyone to think I believe that EVERY
musician has to have that same definition of success. Not everyone wants to
tour, to take a(nother) shot at the Brass Ring, whatever it may be. In fact,
most of my students over the years have been hobbyists and semi-pros who
want to play locally for FUN. Sure, many want to also make some money but,
like you, have other priorities in their lives. Family, business, dislike of
long periods in broke-down vans with several other smelly, cranky guys.
Basic stuff like that.

And there's not a DARN thing wrong with that! And I especially applaud your
entrepreneurial bent and your commitment to your family. As you said, music
is your joy, and that's exactly as it should be. You said it was your
version of a hobby, but I'd add "a serious one" at least in the sense that
you want to do it well. And that's a perfect place for music to be in your
life.

The other point I'd like to make is that I think you were right to be very
upfront with them about YOUR priorities, and the limits you have set. You've
done your job, and put it all on the table.

Good luck, and I hope you love it!
