I hope JS is not serious in his condemnation of playing music for any
purpose other than income. Music is art, and there are many of us who no
longer pursue music as a vocation, but are still artists and still need to
express ourselves through music. I am one of those. I play bass for the
sheer love of playing bass. My band days are over for now, but if I found a
few other musicians to create with, I would be happy to do so. There's
nothing wrong with creating and playing music because you enjoy it, even if
you don't make a profit doing it. Congratulations to anyone to plays in an
originals band for artistic expression through music!
No argument from me, but I think it needs to be said that there is
considerable satisfaction in playing other people's music too. I don't play
in an originals band and haven't in over 40 years. However, I bring my own
interpretation to everything I play and always have. I play now with a
bunch of other old guys and we don't expect to make any real money and don't
need to. We are playing what I sometimes hear referred to as "The American
Song book". Sinatra stuff. My only point, is there is satisfaction in
making good music. There is satisfaction in making good original music, of
course, but there's a lot less good original music out there than there is
good classic music.
