This I think completely sums it all up. One of the great jazz drummers
said, "You play because you must!". And that sums up the "art" side of
music. Sure music can be a business and money maker, just as if you
are a painter you can work at a big ad agency drawing pictures of
couches for the Sunday Supplement ads. But the truth is both in music
and painting an artist does it because they must. They have something
to "say" and you just can't help but say it. The "starving artist"
thing is a legend and it's true. Sometimes your art can catch on and
become an income early on, but how often do you see artists who only
hit it big very late in life or even only after they are dead. This is
as true in music as it is in other forms of art. But it doesn't
matter. Because the goal of a "real" artist isn't to live in a
mansion. What fun is that? The true goal is that 200 years from now
people are STILL talking about old Joe Blow the "pioneer" of XYZ
music. And cats are STILL using what YOU had to say as a foundation
for what they are trying to say. Just think of the 'greats" in ANY
genre and you'll know what I'm talking about. That is where the action
is. And to try to reduce that to dollars and cents is, well, just
plain silly.
