It seems like your options are:
1) Hit the road on weekends and play every shithole in a 4 state area for
free, eventually pooling your Xmas bonus checks to cut a CD.
2) Play any local coffeehouse/original club/Park and Rec "summer bandshell
series" you can
3) Be a "studio" band (at YOUR studio, most likely), and constantly post
clips on Myspace.
You missed one:
4) Do *not* form/join an original band and instead watch TV and play along with the theme and bumper music thinking, "You know, I've got some good ideas for songs I'd like to see fleshed out and performed in front of people, but since everyone thinks it has to be a for-profit, get-famous venture, I'm stuck here on the couch."
:-)
I'd say that for thousands of years mankind has composed and performed music simply for pleasure. That hasn't changed. What's changed is this notion that it *must* be a profit-making venture. When it comes to original music, I say just accept the fact that you're doing it for the love of it and see where it goes, which may not be very far.
This, of course, doesn't mean I've changed my mind about treating your band like a business. Just understand that in the world of original music, there's virtually no demand for *your* music until you've invested enough time and money to find fans.
