Perhaps this would be a good time for an explanation of counting
musically. Some people may not know how to do it out loud. I know *I*
had been playing a while before somebody taught me. If I was taught
wrong, I'm sure somebody will correct me.
Suppose you're listening to a song with four beats to the measure. We
can all count that aloud:
1 2 3 4
Suppose we want to count with eighth notes. The simple way is to do this
aloud (& means "and"):
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
To go to 16th notes you do:
1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a
Vocalizing the count this way can really help you figure out how
something is timed. Thus the explanation above (come back in on the "&"
of 4 in the fourth bar) is a great way of relaying information. If you
were told to come back on the "a" you'd be hitting that last 16th note.

Another good technique:
For sixteenths, say "huckleberry" on each beat.
For triplets, "blueberry."
