My roots are in blues and classic rock. I'm in an original alternative rock band right now. I enjoy it, but I'm finding it a bit stifling doing just originals.
For my own enjoyment and growth I'd like to be a better funk player. I'd like some suggestions for what you guys would consider songs that really capture the essence of funk.
Thanks in advance.
Not songs per se, but acts. Ohio Players, Earth Wind and Fire, the various Bootsy/Parliment permutations, some of Rick James, the
Meters,...there are others. Brothers Johnson. Booker T.
And, of course, James Brown.
But a good grasp of Motown I would consider essential. Also also,
while funk has distinctive bass styles, the real mutation is
the rhythm guitar. If the bass is funky and the rhythm guitar
isn't, it sounds funny.
