My roots are in blues and classic rock. I'm in an original alternative

For my own enjoyment and growth I'd like to be a better funk player. I'd
like some suggestions for what you guys would consider songs that really
capture the essence of funk.
Thanks in advance.

"Pick up the pieces", Average White band.
The important relevance of that tune is not that the bass shows great
chops. More that it's part of the rhythm section ( obviously) and
together they put out a stripped down seriously in the pocket funk
groove.
The other side of the coin:
"Funk the dumb stuff" Tower of Power. From Monster on a leash.
A T of P track perhaps a little off the beaten path, but Rocco plays a
great line, which is built on some pretty flowery finger funk chops.
I've "borrowed" from that track quite a few times. Actually, while
you're at it, just listen to any T of P.
