For my own enjoyment and growth I'd like to be a better funk player. I'd
like some suggestions for what you guys would consider songs that really
capture the essence of funk.
Go pick up some compilation records; I've found a lot of great stuff on
"Hits of the 70's" compilations as well as the "Soul Train anniversary" CD
set, I picked that one up from the library and it's full of super funky
bass.
I have a student working on her slap chops so I put a bunch of
thumb-heavy tunes on a disc for her to work on; Cameo, Rick James, The Gap
Band, Graham Central Station, Slave, Sly, etc.
Go find some bargain-bin compilation records, I think you'll have better
luck with a few of those than hunting down records by individual artists,
unless there's a specific player you want to study (Jamerson, for example).
