My roots are in blues and classic rock. I'm in an original alternative
rock band right now. I enjoy it, but I'm finding it a bit stifling doing
just originals.
For my own enjoyment and growth I'd like to be a better funk player. I'd
like some suggestions for what you guys would consider songs that really
capture the essence of funk.
Thanks in advance.

I'm sure others will mention the Jamerson, Larry Graham,
or Bootsy etc stuff, or the real "funk" like James Brown,
I don't play much 60s/70s but I like:
70s:
Fred Wesley - Soul Power '74
Joe Tex - Loose Caboose
Disco/Funk - Fingerstyle: (these are some of the trickier ones)
Whispers - And The Beat Goes On
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - Bad Luck
Narada Michael Walden - I Shoulda Loved Ya
Raw 80s Slap:
Cameo - Style
Slave - Stone Jam
Pleasure - Glide
Prince - Let's Work
Marcus Miller - Loving You
