What do you guys recommend for a registry cleaner. Any other tool
to improve Windows XP performance would be appreciated.

Registry cleaners are not likely to have appreciable effect on Windows
performance. They ARE liable to kill your system if you aren't very
careful.

I occasionally use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/). It's good for
emptying your temp directory, your recycle bin, old system log files,
browser caches, etc. It can also examine your registry and alert you to
some inconsistencies, debris left from formerly installed programs,
etc. All of that appeals to my control-freak side that wants everything
on my computer to be Just So. But I don't believe that it makes my
computer perform better. I DON'T let it correct everything it finds. If
I don't understand the purpose of any of it's findings, I leave them
be.

You'll get better performance gains by keeping your temp folder clear,
uninstalling unnecessary programs, disabling unnecessary services (once
again, be careful), keeping plenty of free disk space, and very
occasionally defragmenting your disk.
