Sad to say, I've already reached both of those milestones.
Thing is, when I was in my teens and 20's I mostly played with guys
in their 30s 40s and 50. In my 30s I mostly played with guys in their
50's and 60s. I enjoyed their talent, their wisdom, and getting my
ass kicked by more experienced guys
Now I'm catching up to those old guys, and I've *become* the old guy
who's schooling the kids.
The one bright spot is that kids usually take direction better than
pros, play longer for less money, and are MUCH more open to new ideas
- they haven't become "jazz nazis" yet.
Been thinking about putting together a new piccolo trio; but I want
to do it with guys in their early 20's - first, so I don't have to
hear the pissing an moaning if I call a Black Sabbath tune, and
second, so I can take some free gigs without even more pissing and
moaning.
Oh yeah - there's also the look of awe and reverence you get when you
tell some teenager you saw The Ramones back in the day, or Pearl
Jam's first tour, or Jane's Addiction in their prime, or Art Blakey,
or...
Hell, you're still a spring chicken; you've got a long way to go. I was
gigging back in '68 and crossed paths with the likes of Cream, The
Turtles (if anyone remembers them), and The Rascals. The Ramones were
still nursing at the time, I think.
