Bands and venue owners have to be partners in the enterprise, it's not
economically or ethically justifiable for a venue owner to put the full

failure or success.  It looks to me like the large majority of venue
owners out there are the unprofessional kind, who think they bear no
responsibility for the success of music in their places.  We shouldn't
buy into that mentality.

Here here! I think there are valid points to Jim's, Todd's, John's,
Jimmy's, your and everyone else's attitude. I prefer to play venues
that get that they need to hire consistently good entertainment, to
make themselves a destination. I also think bands need to work at
building followings... so they can let THEIR crowd know where they're
playing next. This is powerful stuff when a new club starts up. "Hey,
let's go see Loose Cannons at that new club out East tonight! It must
be cool if they're playing there!" is as powerful as "Hey let's go see
that new band at Billy Bob's! They must be good if Billy Bob's hired
them!"

It's all about the total package. If the venue sucks, the best band in
the world won't draw well consistently. If the bands suck, the bar
won't draw consistently.

I've always considered that my job, as a professional musician, was to
make it as easy a decision as possible about whether to hire us back
or not, and usually, that meant selling liquor. Period. A good way to
sell liquor is to play a very danceable setlist, and to interact with
your crowd so they like hanging out with you.
