Re: lost another venue

Derek, you are correct in all you add below, but suppose I am the venue
owner. If the band runs off paying customers I don't really CARE why it is.
I'm just trying to make a living. It is absolutely imperative to remember
that the venue operator is a business man, not a music lover. Some of the
musicians are playing for the love of the music, but the venue owner is not.

Yup.

And I think bands that try to ignore this business imperative in the
bar circuit do so at their peril.

If you charge $400 or whatever and can't put enough butts in seats to
make that worth the owner's while, it doesn't matter if it's the fault
of the owner who doesn't promote his bar, or the band that doesn't
draw, the owner won't be excited to reinvest in an act that didn't
solve his problem of ringing the cash register the last time.

The bar owner might end up out of business for other reasons, but I
don't think anyone should grouse too much with the logic.

Of course it's always preferable to play places with a built in draw,
particularly if you're among the majority of bands out there that
doesn't have 100+ people beating down the door to come see them
everywhere they play.
