Hey everyone I have made the decision to take my tax rebate in July
and buy a new bass rig. I want to keep it in the $2000 range. I've
been leaning towards one of three heads but am open to suggestions.
THe 3 I have been leaning towards are Gallien Krueger's 1001 RB, Ampeg
SVT Pro3 or Pro 4, or Mesa Boogie's 750. I also am thinking about
going with all 10" bottoms, but am not sure. Right now I run a 4x10
and a 1x15. Anyway I really could use some bass educated opinions so
please reply to this post one and all.

Thank you, Flava Dave
To me those are three different sounding amps.

How would you describe the sonic characteristics of those three amps? Be accurate, but also feel free to include wine tasting adjectives if you like. "A clean finish with apricot overtones..."

I'm asking because I'll be shopping soon.

Wow. I wish it were possible to relay in words what I hear in my head, but it's just not easy. I'll give it my best shot, though. If you're gonna go shopping for amps, go to www.basstasters.com and listen to the sound clips for all their preamps. That will help get your ear trained.

I find the G-K to be very clean sounding. By that I mean what I put into it is pretty much exactly what I get out of it, but louder. I can tweak the EQ and use the voicing filters to change things up, but in a clean way.

My experience with the Ampeg (not as an owner) is that it adds a bit of a growl and some dirt to the sound while at the same time smoothing it out it and fattening it up a bit.

My experience with a Mesa (not as an owner) is that it was similar in growl/dirt to the Ampeg but without the smoothing or fattening.

Hope that helps.
