Hey folks, been lurking in the group for a while, thinking I might take
the
step and buy myself a bass this week - I've been testing the waters with
the
bass from my son's bandmate and I think it's time to buy one myself.

I understand that I need to test out the choices that I make and find
what I
feel comfortable with, and one that I like in the price range (CDN
$350-450)
is a Schecter (sorry, don't know the model but I think it's in the
Stiletto
Series), and another is an Ibanez. I think I like the feel of the
Schecter a
little better, but I know nothing about them? And, I don't want to
believe
everything that the salesman says without a little validation.

Are Schecter bass' decent/reliable in general? Or all things being equal
would the Ibanez (which I like too!) be a better investment?

I'm not planning on touring any time soon, I have to take some lessons,
learn
to play, but I'm looking for one that will last.

Thanks

Both may be good to start with. Ibanez are commonly considered to be solid
instruments. The same goes with Schecter.

If you like the Schecter better, go with it. You just need a bass you like
better. That way, the bass will "call you" to play it again and again. If
you don't really like the instrument, but bought it because someone else
thought it may be better for you, then it ain't gonna happen.

Good advice.
I bought a Wesley bass a while ago. Because it was very cheap and looked
nice and had the pickup configuration I wanted. It turned out to be a really
nice bass. Since then I've had other basses and own a couple of Warwicks
which are supposed to be better basses... but you know what? I keep going
back to the Wesley and I just love it!

If I asked "shall I get a Wesley or a Warwick", I guess most wold agree the
Warwick is a better bet. But... I am not "most"...

I don't think you have to worry much about reliability. These days, even teh
cheaper instruments are reasonably made. If the Schecter felt better... I'd
say you answered your own question. Both brands are unlikely to give you a
dog. If one feels clearly better to you... that's the one.
