It would be a nutty coincidence though if it decided to die just when
reinstalling your hard drive.
It's fairly new, and hasn't been used an awful lot, either -- but I
suppose it could have up and died on me at just the right time.
Any chance you bent any pins on the dvd-rw drive's ide ribbon connector
anything when swapping
things out?
When I R&R'ed the HD, I didn't even touch the cable connection to the DVD
drive, so I wouldn't think so. I did check them and couldn't spot any
bent pins.
Is there any difference between physically removing and replacing the DVD
drive and just uninstalling and reinstalling the drive in device manager,
as far as loading plug-and-play drivers goes? I.e., should I try pulling
the drive out and reinstalling it, to see if it will trigger the
plug-and-play re-installation of the driver? Maybe uninstalling Roxio,
then reinstalling the DVD drive?
Is there some kind of magic chant I can say, or maybe some sort of
crystals to place on the computer case while I'm doing this?
First, download the latest driver if you haven't done that already, and
unzip it to a directory of its own, remember where you put it.. Then boot to
Safe Mode and remove all CD and DVD drivers from the device manager, there
may be more than one in the system, and that could cause the problem your
having. After removing all of them, reboot and reinstall the proper driver.
If the computer tried to automatically install drivers, cancel it out and
manually install the driver using the "Have Disk" option. Just point it to
the directory that has the new driver. If its a driver issue, that should
cure it.
