But, since re-installing the HD back into the machine, the DVD
burner won't work.

Turn on the computer, once WinXp boots up and it's ready to go,
you go into Windows Explorer and it correctly shows the drive as a
DVD-ROM drive, everything looks normal. Go into device manager,
and everything looks correct, it recognizes the drive as a Sony
DRU-820A, says it's a DVD burner, says it's working normally.

But, if I put a disc in the drive, any kind of disc, CD, DVD,
whatever, as soon as it reads the disc in the drive, it switches
from being a DVD-ROM drive to a CD-ROM drive in Windows Explorer,
and it refuses to write to the disc. It'll retrieve data from the
disc, it'll play music just fine, but it won't write data. In
Windows Explorer, the description changes from DVD-ROM to CD, but
in device manager, everything stays the same, it still says it's a
Sony DRU-820A. Go into Roxio, and it can't find a drive, it says
"No default drive."

I had a very similar problem recently. The drive had gone tits-up. They
just do that - they're cheaply made and expendable. In my case, it was
still (just barely) under warranty, and Samsung replaced it for me. But
I needed one in a hurry, so I bought another one for about $30. Now
that the replacement drive is here, I have a spare, which is always
good for troubleshooting.

So, if I were you, I'd try the following things:

- uninstall the drive from Window's device manager and reboot. But
you've already done that.

- reinstall Roxio

- check the cables in the drive.

- physically move the drive from one IDE controller to another, if
available. This sometimes helps Windows install it freshly, instead of
re-using drivers and settings that are already there.

- swap in another drive, preferably one from a different manufacturer.

- just go buy another one. They're cheap.
