necks

Something occurred to me. I see some manufacturers put graphite
reinforcement rods in their guitar and bass necks. This sounds like a great
idea, adds strength and rigidity to the neck. But then again, I assume these
rods are inserted before the fingerboard is glued on, thus the neck is under
no tension.
Now my question, I would assume the graphite rods are perfectly strait,
wouldn't they fight the truss rod when trying to set the relief on the neck?
If they have a "pre-curve", what if you want a relief counter to said curve?
If the graphite rods bend with the truss rod, what is their real purpose?
Check the link to a Carvin page that shows a cutaway of a neck. The
graphite rod are literally sealed into their slots.
