Exactly. You wanna play rock covers for a living? Don't expect to see much standard notation coming your way, but don't be surprised at how many times you hear the word "tab" bandied about.
I don't understand tab at all so I can't knock it, if it works for you, great. Does it get you gigs though?
There's not much to understand about tab. It's the most expedient way of communicating music for fretted instruments over the Internet, but it has some flaws. It's best used used alongside a recording, but if done well can be used without it. Consider it like shorthand.
When you have to learn tunes on short notice, nothing beats having a bunch of free tab at your fingertips (unless you already have the standard notation).
