Re: .wmv files on MP4 player

Strange indeed! The whole Chinese/English translation is hard to make sense
of. Thanks for the suggestions, though, I'll try some of that.

ASF is a Microsoft "container" format, meaning it doesn't specify what's
in the file, just how the file is organized. .WMV and .WMA files are
actually ASF files so if your player supports video in ASF format it's
probably .WMV. You could try generating some short WMV files with Windows
Movie Maker (ships as part of XP) or download Windows Media Encoder and
convert some videos into .wmv format. Perhaps renaming the video files to
.ASF would make your player recognize them.

The statement "MPEG-4 in ASF format" is a bit strange given that MPEG-4 is
not normally carried in ASF containers. MS wants you to use Windows Media
format and not MPEG. More commonly MPEG-4 video is contained in .mov
(Quicktime container) or .mp4 (MPEG container) or .mpeg files. AVI is
another older popular container sometimes used with MPEG-4.

To play files on your player you need to figure out two things:

- Which container formates does the player handle (.asf, .mov, .mp4, ...)
- Which codec does the player have (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Windows Media, ...)

Since .wmv and .mp4 are very popular you could just download a bunch and
see which work.

Thanks. I've found a bit in the amusingly translated manual that says
"support MPEG-4 in ASF format". Does that mean anything to you? Thanks
for your help.

I have recently been given an MP4 player, which is great for portable
music, but I can't get .wmv or .mpg video files to play on it. I have
copied the files to the device, but it does not recognise them,
showing "no file" when I select the video function. Can anyone
recommend a (preferably free/shareware) download to enable the player
to play these files?

Thanks,

Ian

Which player is it and what OS is running on your PC?

It's a no-name Chinese thing; the only branding on the box is "Music is
My Life". There is a CD-ROM supplied, but appears to contain only
software for the camera function. OS is Windows XP SP2.

Hmm, hard to know what formats the device supports then. There are tons
of variations of video formats. Try getting some MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 files
and renaming them to .mpeg, .mov or .mp4
