Educate Me - What Key is This?

I was looking that chord sequences for "So This is Christmas" by John Lennon. Based on the chords alone, what would the key be and how did you determine as much? Or can you?

My guess is that there's a key change from A to D in the verse and that chorus stays in D until the transition back to A.

My band is doing a cover of this for a contest put on by Alice Cooperstown. In the first round you have to do an original and a cover of a Christmas song. The winner shares the stage with Alice Cooper's band for a Christmas fundraising concert. We're doing this song as our cover. We changed it to 4/4 time and use a half-time rhythm in the chorus. It sounds pretty cool.

And before anybody lectures me about "playing what sounds best" I've already come up with my bass lines. This is an academic question for my own musical education.

BTW, my bandmates have a sense of adventure/humor. For our original song which is a bit heavy for us (http://www.radiobox.com/mp3/index.html - the song is Underwater), we replaced the "solo" part with a verse of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" - it's a pretty funky interlude that my former bandmates would have dismissed out of hand. It's nice hanging with guys who don't take themselves too seriously. I hope we get a decent recording I can share.
