bass shopping

Went to L.A. Friday and tried out a ton of basses. The only one's I REALLY
liked were the Carvin Icon's. They didn't have a 4 string at the Hollywood
outlet but 5 and 6. I was most happy with the fact that even the mighty Icon
6 did not neck dive. Used just a regular cheap woven nylon strap.
I tried everything from MiM Fenders to top of the line Warwick, Pedulla,
Ernie Ball, Modulus. Not that these all didn't sound and play well but just
didn't hit me the way the Carvin did.
The string spacing closer to the nut would take some getting used to on any
of the 6's, but the spacing in the plucking area on the Icon was very
comfortable. Some of the others were either too cramped or just didn't feel
right.
They had an Icon 6 on the rack just like the one featured on the website. I
was sooooo tempted but it didn't have the piezo bridge which is highly
recommended and also I want the quilted maple instead of the flamed maple.
Only came home with some jack's to fix my speaker cables, and a pop filter
for my tube condenser mic but the trip was worth it getting to try all the
basses I have been looking at via the net. Now I know what I want. Still not
sure I'm going to go for a 6 but I know I'm getting an Icon.
Oh, I also played a couple of 12 string basses, sounded really cool but it
would appear they pretty much need to be picked, the sound of finger playing
was a little ragged. Of course my first time playing one but it just didn't
seem like a finger style instrument.
