There have been several threads about dead spots on electric basses.
This plagues many of us and even the most expensive bass can have dead
spots.
A recent thread stated that this is a physical characteristic of a
bass.
It may be but for me it has been controllable using eq and/or a good
bass preamp.
In the 90's I modified my 70's jazz bass for recording.
I set it up for stereo and removed the tone control on the bass since
I did all my eq'ing through other sources.
The bass recorded well.
But when I plugged it into an amp it was loaded with dead spots.
So why were there no dead spots when recording?
When recording I used an Alembic preamp as well as a 31 band Alesis
rack eq.
I dialed in the sound I wanted.
Through the amp I did not use eq or a preamp.
I am not smart about sound.
I don't know what effects to use to eliminate dead spots so I tried my
recording setup by using the preamp and eq before going to the bass
amp and low and behold no dead spots.
Once I returned the bass back to factory specs by reinstalling a tone
pot the dead spots were almost nonexistent.
What little there were were eliminated by the preamp.
I can only base my opinion on this by my experiences with this
particular project.
Can anyone elaborate on this?

When I bought my first Fender bass (a fretless) many years ago
it had a dead spot. I changed the type of strings I used (from
some kind of slinky "multicore" to a heavier standard flatwound)
and it went away. I have several Fender basses notorious
for dead spots but have not had much problem, continuing
to use heavier flatwound or "half-round" strings.
