EQ can't restore what isn't there and unless you're going to spend the money on a good parametric EQ and learn to use it I wouldn't think that for most people EQ is a great way to solve this....and even then EQ can't restore what isn't there. You may have just gotten lucky this time.
I think learning to play around the dead spots and super resonant spots or wolf tones and even to use them to your advantage is part of a personal relationship with any wood instrument because they all have some anomalies. Unless they're really bad and then why'd you buy the thing in the first place? Also with the exception of the 5 lowest notes (the upper register isn't usually the problem) you have two or more choices as to where you play a particular note and if they're all dead you need a different bass.
