Not ALWAYS the case.
If the harmonics are lower in amplitude than the fundamental,
which is often the case, the harmonic waves will "ride" the
fundamental and will for SOME of their periods not cross zero
(create a change sign) and for some sine periods, where the
fundamental is close to zero, cause a "spurious"change sign.
To detect the fundamental the MY software would treat the
harmonic crossing similarly to contact debouncing as it tries
to focus down on the lowest frequency which would most likely
be presumed to be the fundamental.
There are no hard an fast rules so the software must be very
robust.
With the FFT method the smaller (and subsequently faster) the
data window the less low frequencies can be resolved. The
longer the window the more latency and low frequency
resolution. Yet another trade off.
