Signal cables SHOULD'T effect the sound, in that any competently

Of course that's true. My point (which I'm sure you understand) is that
sometimes they do, and if it's because the new cable is replacing one
that was defective somehow, then the change will be a positive one, and
it's perfectly valid for someone to claim they heard an improvement in
their sound in that case.

There are three classes of cables in question:

1) Broken due to defect
2) Functional
3) Broken due to design

Most cables fall under #2, with the cheaper ones generally being
more likely to transition from #2 to #1.

Most expensive esoteric "audiophile" cables fall under #3.

The thing I always get a kick out of is how people will always perceive
any change as a positive one. When they say "it's a night and day
improvement," they really mean they can detect a difference, that's all.

I wouldn't even bet on that - because not only do people almost always
percieve a difference as positive, they almost always percieve a
difference if something is changed with their knowledge - regardless
of whether any difference is actually audible.
