when your left hand hurts..

anyone more experienced got some advice on this one?

i've found some cool exercises that really challenge the left hand.
but how far can it be pushed? if you start at higher frets/ thinner
strings, that doesn't seem too difficult to play so it's hard to say
how effective that really is. but you can keep doing those for a lot
longer.

when i try going lower and thicker, it starts hurting after 1 minute
due to the exercise being very repetitive. so i'll do one minute, then
do something else, and try to keep doing the one minute a few times
each time i practice.
maybe a more complicated pattern with lots of movement and variation?

the left hand position recommended for guitar seems difficult on a
bass, you definitely need
more support from the thumb on a bass, so a light touch with hardly
any squeeze seems to result in weak notes or fretbuzz? i've watched
different bass players and most of them don't stick to one particular
left hand technique, or a uniform "correct" technique.

what's better, playing 10 minutes of the pattern on higher strings or
playing 1 minute right on the edge of your capabilities? or just
playing it really slowly and precisely in the less painful position?
i guess i could switch to other exercises and put that one on hold for
now. my hand hurts. but it's hard to play interesting lines without
those left hand movements, so avoiding them is not a good option, long-
term.
